Straight Paths
Proverbs 3: 1-6
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
Proverbs 3:6
San Francisco is one of America’s most beautiful cities, with its majestic bay, iconic bridges, and panoramic views in every direction. Yet many tourists head to one little street as soon as they arrive in town—Lombard Street, claimed to be the most crooked street in the world. This one steep block boasts eight hairpin turns. Picturesque as it is, residents are none too happy with the endless line of cars inching down the hill in a nonstop procession day and night.
Lombard Street is fun to see, but none of us wants a life full of steep declines, hairpin turns, and crooked routes. The Bible often uses words like road and path to describe the journey of life, and Jesus told us to look for the straight and narrow path (Matthew 7:13-14).
We cannot know the future, but our God knows every tomorrow before the sun comes up. The residents of Lombard Street can fend for themselves, but for the rest of us—let’s live at 356 Proverbs Street: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
A point to ponder…
Discovering God’s will for your life does not result from deal-making with the Almighty, but begins instead with surrender.
